Top Drawer eNewsletter 5.3.16

We’d like to thank everyone who came to the opening last week for our brief two-week show LIKE-MINDEDLIKE-MINDED was a collaborative exhibit featuring work by artists from Top Drawer Art At The Brass (LIFE Inc., Warren) and Out Of The Box (Bridges, Inc., Jamestown): two local studios providing art programs for adults with developmental disabilities and curated by MaKayla Reese (Paul W. Crowley East Bay MET School, Newport).  As the title suggests, these two programs share similar philosophies when it comes to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities: encouraging independence, creativity, and self-empowerment through the arts.  It was a great night with lots of familiar faces in the house, and a wonderful unofficial kickoff to our Art Night show season!  Thanks to everyone who came and for those who couldn’t make it, we’ll be keeping some select gift items from Out Of The Box for sale in our retail area, so stop by and check out what other excellent programs like Top Drawer have to offer!

We’re happy to say that the first show of the season, New Folk Art: Work by Anthony Brum, Kayla Buja, Theresa Medeiros, Michael Pascale and Toni Vollaro is up now for viewing in the Top Drawer gallery!  These five artists share a knack for making colorful, exuberant work which always contains that cartoony smile and that hand-made, human touch.  The five artists in this exhibit are tried and true members of Top Drawer, creating work that dates back to the program’s inception in 2005, but who’ve managed to continue and expand their classic styles, always finding new ways to add complexity to their work.  This is the first of six shows we’ll be presenting this Art Night season, each of which will feature five artists each, 30 featured artists in all- a record number for Top Drawer!  There’s just too much great work, and too many amazing artists in our program to not show as much as possible!  Come see New Folk Art this month, our come to the Art Night reception on Thursday, May 26th, 5 pm – 9 pm.

In the meantime, stop by Top Drawer on Thursday, May 12th, 3 pm – 6 pm, for the kickoff of our CONVERSATIONS Visiting Artist series!  This month’s featured artist is Maine textile designer Kristen Butke, who’ll be leading a sewing workshop where participants will get a chance to make their own tote bag!  This is a great chance to stop by and support our programs, check out some amazing art, and leave with your own tote bag!  $10 suggested donation.  Check out Kristen’s website for more info about her:  www.scissormade.com

Until next time, keep on supporting your local artists!
